Audubon Park Offers Activities for Children and Parents

Campground Activities July 22-25


Friday, July 23

2:00 PM Nature Journaling - Create and decorate your own John James Audubon Nature Journal. The memories you capture in this journal will last a lifetime. Where? Campground Shelter. How Long? 1.5 hours. Who? Ages 6 and up.

3:00 PM Let’s Pretend - that we are John James Audubon out hiking through Wolf Hills. We’ll walk around Recreation Lake with our new Nature Journals and, like Audubon, we will record what wildlife we observe. Where? Campground Shelter How Long? 1 hour Who? Ages 6 and up. Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

5:00 PM Animal Face Painting – Bears, bobcats and rabbits, oh my! Hop on down to the Campground Shelter and have your favorite animal painted on your cheek or hand. Where? Campground Shelter. How Long? 1 hour. Who? All ages

Saturday, July 24

10:00 AM Fly Away – Let your imagination go up-up-and-away as we fly our handcrafted airplanes. As the Wright brothers designed their own flying machine that changed history, our flying machines will change and brighten your day. Where? Campground Shelter How Long? 45 minutes Who? All Ages

1:00 PM Pinecone Bird Feeders – Come discover the wonderful hobby of bird watching and feeding. Find out how you can attract birds of all kinds to your backyard and make a bird feeder that is sure to bring in some feathered friends. Where? Campground Shelter. How Long? 30 minutes. Who? All ages.

3:00 PM Habitats R Us – The Earth has many different environments, and each of these habitats has distinct life forms living in it. Learn what it takes for them to survive. Then we will design and create our own biome. Where? Campground Shelter How Long? 1 ½ hours Who? Age 6 and older.

Sunday, July 25
FAMILY FUN AT RECREATION LAKE
$2.00 per person

4:00 PM Pedal Boat Races – Teams will compete by pedaling these exciting water craft along a designated course. Prizes will be awarded to the winner of each heat.

5:00 PM Summertime Picnic – Join our Audubon Staff for an old-fashioned picnic. Grilled hot dogs with all of the trimmings will be served to our guests until 6:00 pm.

4:00 – 7:00 PM Make your own Fishing Pole – Huck Finn made his poles from sticks he’d find in the woods. We’ll provide the sticks ‘n stuff for you to make a fishing pole to be proud of! Then you can go catch yourself a mess of bluegill.

4:00 – 7:00 PM Fishing Fun – Join us for a fun evening of fishing on the lake. We will provide the bait for your stick poles. All you need to bring is a smile and a little bit of luck. If you are over age 16, you must have a valid Kentucky fishing license.

Thursday, July 29

6:00 PM Fishing Fun – Join us for a fun evening of fishing on the lake. We provide the equipment. All you need to bring is a smile and a little bit of luck. Where? Meet at Boat Dock. How Long? 1½ hour. Who? All, children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. 16 and older must have a valid Kentucky fishing license.

Friday, July 30

3:00 PM Tissue Paper Flowers - Fill your room or camper with fun flowers when you create your own beautiful bouquet of colorful tissue paper flowers. Activity Location: Campground Shelter Length: 45 minutes. Ages 7-adult.

5:00 PM BINGO - Bring out the whole family and enjoy an hour of bingo! We will play a variety of bingo games including traditional, coverall, and more. Come test your luck and possibly win a prize. Where? Campground Shelter. How Long? 1 hour. Who? Adults and supervised children are welcome.


Saturday, July 31

10:00 AM It’s Not Easy Being Green - Explore how animals use their colors to hide from predators. Sing along in a chorus to attract a date. See up close and personal how remarkable these camouflage critters truly are. Activity Location: Campground Shelter. Length: 45 minutes. Ages? All.

1:00 PM Pioneer Toy Making - Keep cool under the Campground Shelter while you have fun making toys that kept pioneer children happy. Little girls loved their Corn Husk Dolls, and both boys and girls smiled when their spinning toy started humming! Activity Location: Campground Shelter. Length: 1 1/2 hours. Ages: All.

4:00 PM Ice Cream In a Bag - I scream! You scream! We all scream for Ice Cream! You will make your favorite flavor in a most unusual way and get to enjoy it right away. Where? Campground Shelter. How Long? 1 hour. Who? All ages. Cost? Free

Bluegrass in the Park Festival Lineup Includes Traditional, Progressive, and International Groups

The 25th annual Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival is set to take place August 13-14, 2010, in Henderson, Kentucky. The festival will feature great Bluegrass music, events, and food, all in an incredible location on the banks of the Ohio River.

The musical lineup for 2010 boasts traditional and progressive Bluegrass acts, including festival headliners, The Boxcars, who may very well be the country’s next Bluegrass super group. Comprised of some of the most talented fellows in the genre, the band members include Adam Steffey, Ron Stewart, John Bowman, Keith Garrett, and Harold Nixon. The festival will also feature a progressive Bluegrass from Russia, Country Saloon. The festival promises fans a Bluegrass music experience like no other!

In addition to great Bluegrass performances, some of the featured events at the festival include Kentucky Folklife exhibitors, Breakfast in the Park, children's activities, the Jammin' & Jumpin' Street Vault, Servin’ & Slammin’ Tennis Tournament, Pickin’ & Pedalin’ Bicycle Tour, and more. This year, the festival announced a new event, the Flippin’ and Flyin’ Disc Golf Tournament.
As always, the Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival is free.

"A Fiesta of Flavors" Evansville Living Magazine

Los Toribio, one of Henderson's Mexican restaurants was recently reviewed in Evansville Living Magazine. Staff writers had good things to say about the decor, service..and of course THE FOOD.

"Ignacio “Nacho” Toribio never planned to work in a restaurant. Nearly three decades ago, living in Atlanta, he spent weekends helping his older brother Ramon run a Mexican restaurant. Arriving early in the morning and staying late at night “was something I didn’t like at all,” Toribio admits. “I was 25 or 26 and enjoying my life. I said, ‘This is not for me.’”

But years later, Toribio learned of a small Mexican eatery for sale in Henderson, Ky. Thinking of his brother’s successful business in Atlanta, he told himself, “At least I’m going to give it a try.” Toribio now owns two Los Toribio Mexican restaurants in Henderson."

Enjoy the beauty of Henderson County while driving to a variety of farm operations.

Tour Venues include Audubon Nursery, Blue Moon Stables, Cates Farm, Crowder Farms, Daniel Farms, Double A Farms, the Farmer's Market, High Hill Orchard, Mattingly Kids Berry Farms, Rolling Hills Equestrian Center, Ruby Moon Winery, Seldom Rest Farm, Stagg Farms, Stone Hill Honey, Triple E & Windimere Farms and Warren Berry Farm.


Presentations start on the hour at each location, but please feel free to start whenever you choose. Explore a corn maze, see a honeybee colony up close, sample wines, view horses and sheep, pick berries, view various tobacco equipment and much more!

Pickin’ & Pedalin’ Bicycle Tour To Be Held Saturday, August 14th


The 7th Annual Pickin’ & Pedalin’ Bicycle Tour will be held Saturday, August 14th in Henderson, Ky in conjunction with the Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival. This year’s ride will benefit the American Red Cross Cardinal Chapter.

The ride begins at Audubon Mill Park, located on Water Street between First and Second Streets in downtown Henderson, Ky. Routes travel through Main Street where you can view many beautiful, historic homes on the way to some of the flattest and nicest country roads a bicyclist could ever want.

Offered routes include 12, 22, 37, or 62 miles in length. Traffic is generally light, but all riders must always exercise caution. Several rest stops along the way will feature live bluegrass entertainment, refreshments and restrooms.

Early registration prior to August 5 is $25. Price is $30 per rider after that date.
