Ruby Moon Plans Annual Arts & Crafts Festival for Saturday June 2

Ruby Moon Vineyard and Winery will host their 5th annual Arts & Crafts Festival on Saturday June 2 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Several area artists and crafts people will display and sell their works of art throughout the vineyard grounds. See painters, potters, jewelry makers and much more. The festival will also feature live music by Ryan Rigdon from 1 to 3 p.m. and music by Opal Fly from 4 to 6 p.m. Admission to the event is free, and all ages are welcome.

Steamboat Exhibit at The Depot Offers Interesting History Lesson

In conjunction with River Heritage Days, the Depot Community Room and the Henderson County Public Library have joined together to present this traveling exhibit that tells the story of the first steamboat to successfully navigate America’s western inland rivers, the New Orleans, and how it altered American life forever by hastening the opening of the American West and transforming the landscape, economy and culture of the United States.

This exhibit introduces the adventurers who first dared to take a steamboat on the Ohio River, the technology they used and the ramification – both positive and negative – of their actions. Steamboat a Comin’: The Legacy of the New Orleans provides viewers with an understanding and appreciation of the adventurous spirit that colored much of early river travel, the technological achievements, the vast impact on landscape and economy, and the rich culture we have today as a result.

The Rivers Institute at Hanover College sponsored this traveling exhibit to mark the bicentennial in 2011 of the first steamboat to successfully voyage down the Ohio River.

The exhibit encompasses three themes and will be on display through the Month of May. “The Legacy of the New Orleans,” and “Life Along the River” can be viewed at the Depot Community Room, 101 N. Water Street, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. “A Frontier No More – River Economy and Steam Technology” can be viewed at the Henderson County Public Library, 101 S. Free Guided Walking Tour of Downtown Henderson Offered May 5

Join the Depot Community Room staff for a guided tour throughout downtown Henderson on Saturday, May 5. The tour highlights the exhibits in the Depot Community Room, as well as historical homes and buildings in Henderson's downtown area.

Audubon Woods Run to be held May 5 at Audubon State Park

The third annual Audubon Woods Run will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Audubon State Park in Henderson. As in past years, a portion of the challenging 5K run/walk will follow wilderness trails at the park. The 2012 event will also have a Kentucky Derby theme – “Off to the Races” – and include a Derby hat competition.

Runners, walkers and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to enter. The race route will take participants into the far reaches of the park along Warbler Road to Back Country Trail, past Wilderness Lake to Coffee Tree Trail and back to start/finish line near the park’s Tea House. There will be two water stations on the route as well as free fruit and water available at the end of the race. Trophies will be given in several age groups and both trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top overall finishers.

The registration fee is $20 before May 1, 2012 and $25 thereafter. River Heritage Day Offering Crawfish Boil on the Ohio May 12

Ohio Valley Marine Service and the Depot Community Room are pleased to announce an additional event during their second annual “River Heritage Day” on Saturday, May 12.

In addition to the free daytime event held in Audubon Mill Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., which features hands-on educational exhibits, activities and games, the evening will feature a “come and go” crawfish boil dinner served from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the 3B’s Entertaining events barge. While docked at the riverfront, you can enjoy dinner while listening to Cajun music, provided by a local deejay. Portions of the proceeds from this dinner will benefit Riverview School.

The highlight of the free daytime event will be exhibits from RiverWorks Discovery Center, a hands-on educational exhibit from the National Rivers Hall of Fame that features giant 3-D puzzles and a working lock and dam. There will be other activities and games to help you learn and celebrate the history, culture, commerce and conservation of the mighty Ohio!

Susan Fowler, a professional storyteller, will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. to share exciting tales of how early steamboats with some famous passengers traveled down the Ohio to Henderson and beyond.

Ohio Valley Marine’s deckhand training team from Job Corps will be demonstrating proper ways to throw lines and create bumpers throughout the day, and will be offering line-throwing contests for children and adults beginning at 1 p.m.

You can learn about birds and animals that depend on the river for their homes and food. There will be a demonstration on how the river is used to turn coal into electricity, and other exhibits on river safety, commerce and conservation.

The events barge will be docked at the riverfront from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be available for free tours.

The Depot Community Room is funded by the City of Henderson through the Henderson County Tourist Commission and works closely with the Henderson Historical and Genealogical Society to provide quality history-related programming and exhibits. For more information, phone (270) 830-9707.

'Gardens That Swing' Garden Tour Will Be Held June 9

The Garden Club of Henderson Kentucky will host GARDENS THAT SWING IV, June 9. The semi-annual tour is held in conjunction with the W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival (June 11-19). The tour runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., rain or shine.

The tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance from Third Street House in downtown Henderson and Maxine’s and Wildflowers in Evansville, Indiana. On the day of the tour, the tickets will be available for purchase at any garden on the tour or in Central Park where visitors can treat themselves to world-class barbecue and a day of live blues entertainment.

"Blues in the Schools" Starts Next Week in Henderson

The Music Preservation Society’s "Blues In The Schools", featuring Fruteland Jackson, will be in schools throughout western Kentucky next week.

The program is an educational project for children, which teaches topics including the history of blues music, famous blues musicians, as well as writing, singing and performing.

Henderson's Tri-Fest Celebrates Its 25th Year in 2012

What started out as a fundraising opportunity for our schools, churches and non-profit organizations in the spring of 1988 has grown into one of Henderson’s largest community festivals. This year’s Breakfast Lions Club Tri-Fest will be held April 20-22 in downtown Henderson.

The event will kick off Friday, with food booths opening at 11:00 a.m. and carnival rides opening at noon. The festival continues Saturday and Sunday with carnival rides, food and live entertainment. This year’s event features music by the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and River City Quartet, to name a few. For a complete listing of scheduled performers, please visit www.hendersontrifest.org.

The slogan of the Henderson Breakfast Lions Club is “We Serve”; the Tri-Fest is our opportunity to give back a small portion and serve the community. Diane Earle to Perform Piano Recital

Diane Earle, chair of the Department of Communication and Fine Arts at Kentucky Wesleyan College, will present a piano recital Sunday, February 12, 3 pm, at Henderson Fine Arts Center. This program, called “Piano Valentines”, is a program of many varied styles of piano music, including pieces by Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Bartok, Francaix, Gershwin, and others. Earle has performed in 27 states and 8 countries, and is preparing for concerts in Rome, Italy this summer.

This concert is a part of the On Stage Series sponsored by Henderson Fine Arts Center Guild. Everyone is invited to attend this free concert.

Two Henderson Music Festivals Win 'Top 20' Award for 2012

It’s an exciting year for two Henderson music festivals. The Southeast Tourism Society has named both the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival and the Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival “Top 20 Events in the Southeast” for 2012.

The Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Events publication receives extensive exposure in print media, web, television and radio in the U.S. and Canada. These events were nominated by the Henderson County Tourist Commission because of their impact on the community and the value each festival places on the history and culture of western Kentucky.

This year the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival will be held June 9-16. The festival features some of the biggest names in blues, a Taste of Henderson Barbecue Cook-off, a Mardi Gras-style street strut parade and weeklong community events.

Bluegrass in the Park will be held August 10-11. The event includes a fantastic mix of bluegrass music, several sporting events, an outdoor pole-vaulting competition, and an accompanying Folklife Festival with activities for both children and adults.

Second Girl's Night Out Scheduled for December 8th

Because of the overwhelming success of the last Girl's Night Out, another event has been planned for December 8th from 5-10pm in downtown Henderson. Bring your friends for a night out on the town. Local retailers will offer special discounts.

A portion of the proceeds will go to the Family Resource Center's Backpack Program. Hunger and lack of food sources are an issue for many children in our community. This program, addresses these issues.

Annual Turkey Trot Offers Way To Give Back on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for being thankful and giving back to the community. That’s the inspiration behind the annual Turkey Trot in Henderson, Ky. The 5K run/walk is held every Thanksgiving morning in downtown Henderson.

This year the walk will be held Thursday, November 24. Registration is from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m. The race starts at 9:00 am at Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Washington and Main Streets.

Entry donation is a free will offering or a $25 donation, which includes a t-shirt. Donations go to the trot benefactor, Brain Injury Adventure Camp (BIAC). BIAC is a non-profit organization that provides activities and education to persons suffering from a traumatic brain injury.

This Friday's Gallery Hop Attracts Artists to Downtown

The 3rd Annual Art Hop Gallery Show & Sale is scheduled for November 4, 2011 in Downtown Henderson from 5:00pm to 10:00pm.

This unique and wildly popular event is the perfect evening out as Tri-State artist display their wonderful original works of art for the community to view as well as purchase.

Part Time Farm Offers Weekend Hayrides to See the Fall Colors

"At Part Time Farm (PTF) we want people to have fun on the farm while making memories with their family!" writes owner, Bettye Willingham. And fun they will have!

Part Time Farm offers so much to do for families. It's a great fall activity everyone will enjoy.

This weekend (Oct. 28-30, 2011) the farm is offering hay rides to groups of 20 or more to see the changing of the leaves. This is approximately a 45 minute ride with stops between and a bonfire after. Must call (270) 521 7018 for times. The cost is $5.00 per person.

Other activities include a one acre round bale hay maze with peacocks and rabbits. Gather eggs from the hen house and get up close with goats and chickens. In the barn, you'll find mini horses, mini donkeys and baby calves to feed. Children under 4 years of age are free. Plan to spend at least 2-4 hours. Open Friday at 6pm, Saturdays at 9am and Sundays 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

The farm is located at 7072 Sportsman Club Road, Robards KY 42452. Directions: Take South Pennyrile Parkway to Exit 68 (approx. 12 miles) turn left on 416 about 100 yards or on the right will be a Part Time Sign.

Walk on the Wild Side – Nature Programs for Toddlers

Oct. 14 Itsy Bitsy Spiders - Thousands of different kinds of spiders live in the U.S. and each has an important role controlling pests. Learn about spiders and their webs and make your own spider…just in time for Halloween.

Methodist Hospital Antique Show This Weekend: October 1-2

The Henderson Regional Hospital Foundation will hold its 24th annual Antique Show, Antiques and Accents on Saturday, October 1st and Sunday, October 2nd at RiverBend Academy, corner of Main and Second Streets in Henderson. The Antique Show will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 per person and available at the door.

The 24th Annual Antique Show will feature dealers representing a variety of genres including orchids, antique and estate jewelry, silver, fine china, and holiday gifts. Shoppers are sure to find something special for everyone on their list.

Attendees can also take a break from shopping to indulge in country ham biscuits, decadent homemade desserts, soups, sandwiches and more.

Preview Party
The Henderson Regional Hospital Foundation is also hosting a Preview Party on Friday, September 30th at 7:30 p.m. at RiverBend. This event gives guests the first opportunity to shop the various antique and gift booths, win fabulous door prizes (including a personalized iPad 2), receive dealer discounts, and start bidding on the silent auction items.

Girl's Night Out: Shopping to Support the Backback Club

Grab your girlfriends and head to Downtown Henderson Thursday, October 20th for the first ever girls night out. We have 14 retailers who will be keeping their doors open until 8:00 pm. Learn how to wear a scarf, dress for a holiday party or just enjoy a little retail therapy after a long day of work.

Julie and Jessica at Classic Cut will also be staying open until 8 for you to come see their new Shellac Nail System for natural nails or you can experience the beach in October with a spray tan by “Vani – T”!

After you are done shopping enjoy drink specials and live music at Rookies Sports Bar and Restaurant.

This event is also a fundraiser for the local elementary and middle schools weekend backpack club. The weekend backpack program is a program provided through the Family Resources Center to provide nutritious snacks to students whose families are struggling to meet their needs. FRC will identify students in need of assistance by consulting with teachers, staff and the Homeless program. The FRC will then make contact with the family and gain consent for services. Every Friday a backpack will be filled with nutritious snack items to help many children make it through the weekend without going hungry. A percentage of the sales on the day of October 20th will go the backpack club.
