Diane Earle to Perform Piano Recital

Diane Earle, chair of the Department of Communication and Fine Arts at Kentucky Wesleyan College, will present a piano recital Sunday, February 12, 3 pm, at Henderson Fine Arts Center. This program, called “Piano Valentines”, is a program of many varied styles of piano music, including pieces by Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Bartok, Francaix, Gershwin, and others. Earle has performed in 27 states and 8 countries, and is preparing for concerts in Rome, Italy this summer.

This concert is a part of the On Stage Series sponsored by Henderson Fine Arts Center Guild. Everyone is invited to attend this free concert.

Two Henderson Music Festivals Win 'Top 20' Award for 2012

It’s an exciting year for two Henderson music festivals. The Southeast Tourism Society has named both the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival and the Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival “Top 20 Events in the Southeast” for 2012.

The Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Events publication receives extensive exposure in print media, web, television and radio in the U.S. and Canada. These events were nominated by the Henderson County Tourist Commission because of their impact on the community and the value each festival places on the history and culture of western Kentucky.

This year the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival will be held June 9-16. The festival features some of the biggest names in blues, a Taste of Henderson Barbecue Cook-off, a Mardi Gras-style street strut parade and weeklong community events.

Bluegrass in the Park will be held August 10-11. The event includes a fantastic mix of bluegrass music, several sporting events, an outdoor pole-vaulting competition, and an accompanying Folklife Festival with activities for both children and adults.

Carolina Chocolate Drops To Play in February at Fine Arts Center

If you’ve got a hankerin' for some foot-stomping, knee slapping banjo beat, with a simmering old-time Bluegrass flavor, then look no further! The Carolina Chocolate Drops are coming to town with banjo, fiddle, guitar, snare, kazoo, jugs, and bones in tow. The performance will be held at the Henderson Fine Arts Center, February 9 at 7:30pm. The center is located at 2660 South Green Street, Henderson, KY.

You’re sure to be on your feet and clapping along as soon as the Chocolate Drops take the stage and turn up the energy! Second Girl's Night Out Scheduled for December 8th

Because of the overwhelming success of the last Girl's Night Out, another event has been planned for December 8th from 5-10pm in downtown Henderson. Bring your friends for a night out on the town. Local retailers will offer special discounts.

A portion of the proceeds will go to the Family Resource Center's Backpack Program. Hunger and lack of food sources are an issue for many children in our community. This program, addresses these issues.

After shopping, come to Rookies Sports Bar from 8-10pm for drink specials and live music.

Annual Turkey Trot Offers Way To Give Back on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for being thankful and giving back to the community. That’s the inspiration behind the annual Turkey Trot in Henderson, Ky. The 5K run/walk is held every Thanksgiving morning in downtown Henderson.

This year the walk will be held Thursday, November 24. Registration is from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m. The race starts at 9:00 am at Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Washington and Main Streets.

Entry donation is a free will offering or a $25 donation, which includes a t-shirt. Donations go to the trot benefactor, Brain Injury Adventure Camp (BIAC). BIAC is a non-profit organization that provides activities and education to persons suffering from a traumatic brain injury.

Part Time Farm Offers Weekend Hayrides to See the Fall Colors

"At Part Time Farm (PTF) we want people to have fun on the farm while making memories with their family!" writes owner, Bettye Willingham. And fun they will have!

Part Time Farm offers so much to do for families. It's a great fall activity everyone will enjoy.

This weekend (Oct. 28-30, 2011) the farm is offering hay rides to groups of 20 or more to see the changing of the leaves. This is approximately a 45 minute ride with stops between and a bonfire after. Must call (270) 521 7018 for times. The cost is $5.00 per person.

Other activities include a one acre round bale hay maze with peacocks and rabbits. Gather eggs from the hen house and get up close with goats and chickens. In the barn, you'll find mini horses, mini donkeys and baby calves to feed. Children under 4 years of age are free. Plan to spend at least 2-4 hours. Open Friday at 6pm, Saturdays at 9am and Sundays 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Methodist Hospital Antique Show This Weekend: October 1-2

The Henderson Regional Hospital Foundation will hold its 24th annual Antique Show, Antiques and Accents on Saturday, October 1st and Sunday, October 2nd at RiverBend Academy, corner of Main and Second Streets in Henderson. The Antique Show will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 per person and available at the door.

The 24th Annual Antique Show will feature dealers representing a variety of genres including orchids, antique and estate jewelry, silver, fine china, and holiday gifts. Shoppers are sure to find something special for everyone on their list.

Attendees can also take a break from shopping to indulge in country ham biscuits, decadent homemade desserts, soups, sandwiches and more.

Preview Party
The Henderson Regional Hospital Foundation is also hosting a Preview Party on Friday, September 30th at 7:30 p.m. at RiverBend. This event gives guests the first opportunity to shop the various antique and gift booths, win fabulous door prizes (including a personalized iPad 2), receive dealer discounts, and start bidding on the silent auction items.

Girl's Night Out: Shopping to Support the Backback Club

The weekend backpack program is a program provided through the Family Resources Center to provide nutritious snacks to students whose families are struggling to meet their needs. FRC will identify students in need of assistance by consulting with teachers, staff and the Homeless program. The FRC will then make contact with the family and gain consent for services. Every Friday a backpack will be filled with nutritious snack items to help many children make it through the weekend without going hungry. A percentage of the sales on the day of October 20th will go the backpack club.

Backroads Farm Tour Offers Animal Viewing, Produce Samples and Beautiful Country Views

The 2011 Henderson County Backroads Farm Tour, a self-guided tour that offers patrons of all ages first-hand looks at up to nine local farming operations, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 24.

Attractions on the free tour include Boucherie Vineyards, the freshwater prawn harvest at Double A Farms, llamas and alpacas at Fun Farm, crafts and landscaping plants at Hillcrest Baskets and Greenhouse, a pumpkin patch and kid-friendly animals at Part Time Farm, horses at Rolling Hills Equestrian Center, wines and cheeses at Ruby Moon Vineyard and Winery, honey and produce at Stone Hill Honey and a grain harvest demonstration by Triple E Farms on its fields off Outer Fifth Street.

Co-hosted by the Henderson-Henderson County Chamber of Commerce's Agriculture Committee and the Henderson County office of the University of Kentucky Extension Service, the tour is designed to educate the public about area farm operations and remind residents about the importance of agriculture in the local economy.

Starting on Sept. 20, tour programs with maps will be available at the extension office on Zion Road, the chamber office at 230 Second Street, the downtown branches of local banks and at the Henderson County Tourist Commission office on Water Street. The day of the tour, programs will be available at each farm, and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on the day of the tour, programs and more information will be handed out at the extension office.

Fernwood Cemetery Tour Set for September 24

A tour of Fernwood Cemetery is planned for September 24, starting at 9am. Tour will begin outside the parks and recreation office at Fernwood Cemetery and will last approximately 1 ½ hours.

As the City of Henderson’s oldest cemetery, Fernwood is steeped in history and tradition. Its residents include former governors, wealthy tobacco magnates, brave soldiers and the founder of Mother’s Day. The Depot Community Room’s walking tour will explore the lives of the cemetery’s famous and infamous inhabitants, and share with visitors the nearly forgotten stories of its ordinary but interesting citizens.

Independence Bank and the Downtown Henderson Project have an exciting 4th of July planned for Henderson and the surrounding communities! We invite you to the riverfront in downtown Henderson for delicious food, children's activities, terrific music and topping it off with an outstanding fireworks show! Since 2002, Independence Bank and the Downtown Henderson Project have worked closely to provide the Henderson community with a fabulous 4th of July fireworks show!

The children's activities will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in Audubon Mill Park on the Henderson Riverfront. The activities include balloon art by Daniel Herron and a petting zoo provided by Equestrian Enterprises. Pony rides will also be available for $3.00.

Our musical entertainment will be provided by Keith Vincent & Friends beginning at 7:00 P.M. Keith Vincent & Friends is a group formed for this event only and includes Keith Vincent, Greg Francis, Brian Glick, Rob Hutchinson, Erick Scales, Leslie Hoskins and Jason Phillips. For this event the band has pulled out some of the great classic rock music along with some country and island, and will be bringing in the 4th of July with a bang! Audubon State Park has planned a number of arts activities for the summer months including a program of arts and nature camps for ages 3-12, monthly art programs for toddlers, a Princess-themed program that includes a tea party, adult artists retreats and more.

Here's what coming up:
Arts & Nature
Arts and nature programs for three age groups are planned in June and will include art, fishing, hiking educational programs on reptiles and birds of prey, paddleboats, Bertha Bubbles and more.
The program fee includes all materials, snacks and a T-shirt. Students should wear tennis shoes and bring a sack lunch. The schedule is:
- Camp Eagle, four-day camp for ages 8-12, June 13-16, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost: $36.
- Camp Sparrow, four-day camp for ages 6-8, June 20-23, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost: $36.
- Camp Buzzy Bees, for ages 3-5 accompanied by an adult, two Fridays (June 10 and June 17), 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Cost: $15.

Tiny Tots Art: "Little Rembrandts"
Arts educator Kim McGrew-Liggett has planned three programs for ages 3-5 (who must be accompanied by an adult). The programs will meet from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on June 3, July 1 and Aug. 5.
Dress for a mess. Pre-registration is required. The schedule is:
- June 3 -- "Bubblelicious Art" with Bertha Bubbles
- July 1 -- "Stars & Stripes," watercolors, sparkles and more

Princess at the Castle
A program for girls ages 6-9 called "Princess at the Castle: A Tea For You" is planned from 10 a.m.-noon on two Wednesdays, July 6 and July 13.
This event will include visual arts projects, storytelling, tea parties and more. On July 13, participants will dress up for a tea party with guest speaker and storyteller Linda Hawkins. The workshop fee, $20, includes all materials.

Turtles, Toads & Doggie Tails
A sculpturing class for ages 6-8 that will use a variety of textures and mixed-mediums is planned for two Thursday, July 7 and July 14, from 10-11:15 a.m. The fee is $12.

Tropical Paradise
A three-session watercolor class for ages 8-12 is set for June 28, July 5 and July 12 from 10-11 a.m. The class fee is $15 for all three sessions.

Artist Retreats
For adults, three Artist Retreats have been set for June 18, July 15 and Aug. 19.
The retreats run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and beginning to advanced artists are invited to bring their own supplies to work. The fee is $15, which includes a noon program. Pre-registration is required.

The Henderson Music Preservation Society is proud to present the 21st Annual W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival during the week of June 11-18, 2011 in downtown Henderson, Ky. Over 20 blues performances are scheduled during a weeklong celebration that includes a Street Strut Peoples Parade, The Taste of Henderson Barbecue, Zydeco Night with Red Beans and Rice, and other events. As part of one of the largest free music festivals in the country, Handy events are all offered free of admission.

This year the festival was named one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society and a Top 10 Summer Event by the Kentucky Travel Industry Association.

The Downtown Henderson Project announces the line up for the 11th Annual DHP Summer Concert Series in Henderson, KY.

The DHP Summer Concert Series will be held on Friday evenings from June 24-July 29, 2011 celebrating a decade of talented musicians. There will not be a Friday concert on July 1. The concerts will be held in Audubon Mill Park, located on the riverfront from 7:00 P.M till 9:00 P.M. .

The Independence Bank 4th of July Celebration fireworks show will be held on Monday, July 4, 2011 on the riverfront. Entertainment for 4th of July will begin at 7:00 P.M. in the amphitheater. Food concessions will be open by 5:30 P.M., childrens' activities will be from 6:00-8:00 P.M. in Audubon Mill Park and the fireworks show will begin at 9:00 P.M. Rain date will be Tuesday, July 5, 2011.

June 24- Dave Lutz Band- Sponsored by I.W.T., Home Oil & Gas Company, and Ameriprise Financial - Building on the success of their acoustic act, Dave Lutz and Jon Snyder have added a bass player, Jeremy Hall, and drummer, Chris Chrockrem, to fill out their sound. Known as the Dave Lutz Band, they play a wide variety of songs from every genre of pop music.

July 4 - Independence Bank 4th of July Celebration - Fireworks sponsored by Independence Bank, Musical Entertainment sponsored by Benton-Glunt, Tapp and Roselawn - The musical entertainment will begin on the riverfront at 7:00 P.M. with Keith Vincent & Friends. Keith Vincent & Friends is a group formed for this event only and includes Keith Vincent, Greg Francis, Brian Glick, Rob Hutchinson, Erick Scales, Leslie Hoskins, and Jason Phillips. Those who attend Chapel Hill United Methodist Church may recognize them as being the praise band leading worship at every Sunday morning service. For this event the band has pulled out some of the great classic rock music along with some country and Island, and will be bringing in the 4th of July with a bang!! The Sellouts fuse together a laidback blend of Old School Soul, Rock, Country, Alternative, Pop and Blues formulating an evening that is guaranteed to stir your senses. The band members consist of Jeremy Hall (Bass Guitar & Acoustic Guitar), Cooper Bell (Rhythm Guitar) and Jason Phillips (Vocals). Jeremy Hall and Cooper Bell, two experienced musicians that played together in bands such as The Gravetones and The Huckleberrys that were seeking a more low key musical experience. Friend and vocalist Jason Phillips soon joined the band offering up a perfect blend of vocals to an already smooth sound. The Sellouts will play anything from Coldplay to Bill Withers and even some Michael Jackson.

Free Disc Golf Clinic Offered May 12

A Disc Golf Basics clinic is scheduled for Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 5:15PM – 7:15PM at the Atkinson Park Disc Golf Course. Instructor H.B. Clark, Design Engineer for the HBC Group, LLC and 30-year professional disc player will go over the basics of disc golf including how to play, keep score, throw, and game strategies. Ohio Valley Marine Service and the Depot Community Room are pleased to announce their partnership in creating “River Heritage Day” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 21, 2011. The highlight of the event will be the River Works Discovery Center, a hands-on educational exhibit from the National Rivers Hall of Fame that features giant 3-D puzzles and a working lock and dam. There will be other activities to help you learn and celebrate the history, culture, commerce and conservation of the Mighty Ohio!

This event is part of the Community Room’s efforts to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the first Steamboat voyage down the Ohio River, an event that changed the course of history – OUR history!

Audubon State Park is the scenic backdrop for the annual Homegrown Bluegrass and Creative Arts Festival in Henderson, Kentucky May 14th.    

The Homegrown Bluegrass & Creative Arts Festival at Audubon State Park attracts more than 2,000 people for a day of local bluegrass music, fine art vendors, festival food, and free children's arts events and activities. The festival features regional vendors spread out throughout the courtyard areas and display their handmade goods and an accompanying Run/Walk in the morning.

Celebrate 150th Anniversay of Civil War With Historic Reading by Author Ray Mulesky

This month marks the 150th anniversary of the first shots fired in the Civil War. The Depot Community Room will begin its commemmoration of this turbulent time in history on Thursday, April 7, at 6 p.m. Author Ray Mulesky will tell us the epic story of how a Henderson Confederate boldly captured Newburgh, Ind.. It was the first town north of the Mason-Dixon line to fall into Confederate hands, and had ramifications for Henderson and western Kentucky as well as southern Indiana.

Mulesky's books, including Thunder From a Clear Sky books will be available for purchase and signing after the talk.

The Depot Community Room is located at 101 N. Water St. in Henderson, Ky. We are funded by the City of Henderson through the Henderson Tourist Commission. The Depot Community Room works closely with the Henderson Historical and Genealogical Society to provide high-quality exhibits and events relating to Henderson's history.

"After Nature" Art Exhibit Presents the World in Full Color

John James Audubon Museum presents “After Nature”, a captivating botanical show by Artist Michael Aakhus. Michael is an Artist, as well as the Dean of Arts at USI. His work has been exhibited widely and is represented in many public and private collections throughout the world. The work in this exhibition will be based on paintings and photographs inspired by travel and the natural world. A new area of exploration will be combining images of flowers with human figures taken from photo documentation done at various sites around the world. The work will continue to examine diverse cultures and landscapes with an eye to bring together many different elements in a rich tapestry of expressive color and iconography.

The Cabela’s King Kat tournament trail will hit the waters of the Ohio River at Henderson, Kentucky April 30, 2011. This is the opportunity for local catfish anglers to compete for cash, prizes and a chance to advance to the Cabela’s King Kat Classic to be held on the Mississippi River at Burlington, Iowa October 27-28-29, 2011. Be sure to check out our new website at: www.kingkatusa.com. It's a new site with new and exciting information on our events along with special information for catfish anglers everywhere.

Weigh-In Site
The tournament weigh-in will be held at the Riverfront Park in Henderson. Tournament hours are 6:30 AM until 3:00 PM. All anglers must be in weigh-in line by 4:00 PM with a 5 fish limit per team. To help preserve the sport only live fish will be weighed in and all fish will be released after the tournament. For a complete list of rules phone or visit our website listed below.

"Please note new rules on registration".
1. Late registration will be held the day before competition at specified location from 5-7 pm. Captains Meeting/Seminar will follow at 7pm.
2. There will be no meeting, late registration or boat launch the morning of the event. Anglers will be allowed to launch on tournament water at 5am tournament morning. No fishing is allowed until 6:30am.

Anglers may fish the Ohio River and its tributaries between Smithland Dam and the Cannelton Dam.

Bonuses for 2011
• Monster Rod Holders Bonus (Qualifying Events): To be eligible for the Monster Rod Holder bonus anglers must have at least 6 Monster Rod Holders on their boat that they competed out of. Monster Rod Holders will pay $200 to the 1st place team.
• Monster Rod Holders Bonuses (At the Classic Event): Monster Rod Holders will pay $1000 to the top placing team of the Classic if they have at least 6 Monster Rod Holders on the boat they competed out of. Also, Monster Rod Holders will award the 3rd place points team a clothing and product package.
• Rippin Lips Angler of the Year -All anglers and/or teams will be competing for points at each event for the right to be crowned “Rippin Lips Angler of the Year”. Anglers will receive points for finish at each tournament (Example -100 pts for 1st,99 pts for 2nd,98 for 3rd,etc.. We will count the top 4 finishes by each angler or team. In the case of a tie, those teams tied will have a fish off at the Classic. The winning angler or team will receive a Rippin Lips Sponsorship. They will get their boat wrapped by Rippin Lips and receive 4 paid entries in 2012 and will be required to maintain that wrap for 2 years. 2nd Place angler/team in the Angler of the Year Race will receive 3 paid entries for the following year and a clothing & product package from Tangling With Catfish. 3rd place in the points race will receive a Monster Rod Holder clothing and prize package.

Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail will hold the Cabela’s King Kat Kids event at the James Audubon State Park in Henderson.. The event is free of charge and open to all youth 12 and younger. Sign up is from 8:00 AM till 9:00 AM with the Kid's event starting at 9:00 AM and ending at 11:00 AM. All children will receive a prize just for entering. Bring your favorite rod, reel and bait and show your true fishing ability. All children must be accompanied by parent or guardian. Prizes for winners will be given in two age groups, 0-7 and 8-12. The event is free to all children 12 and under with all participants eligible for a chance to win one of the six, Outdoor Promotions $2,000.00 scholarships to be awarded in October.

Puppets, Crafts and Books at Literacy Day Event

The free event for children of all ages will be held at Henderson Community College's Sandy Watkins Training Center located in the Sullivan Technology Center.

Henderson Wins Second Top 20 Award in 2011

The Southeast Tourism Society has announced that the Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival has been designated one of its Top 20 Events for August 2011.

One of the oldest on-going free Bluegrass festivals in the United States, Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival celebrates its 26th year in 2011. This year’s festival is set for August 12-13 and features names such as The Grascals, Bearfoot, The Darrell Webb Band, The HillBenders and many more.

This year the festival pays tribute to the 100th birthday of “The Father of Bluegrass,” Bill Monroe and honors Western Kentucky’s history as a center for Bluegrass music.

In addition to two days of great music, the festivals hosts several unique sporting events, a community Breakfast in the Park and an afternoon full of activities intended to educate people about our region’s rich folklife traditions.

A family friendly atmosphere, great food, concessions, inflatable amusements and a beautiful riverfront setting make the festival a destination for all ages.

Ohio Valley’s Got Talent, sponsored by Colonels 2 College, is accepting applications for a talent show to be held at 7 p.m. on February 26, 2011, at the Fine Arts Center at Henderson Community College, 2660 South Green Street.

Auditions will be held Thursday, February 17, from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, February 19, from 10 a.m. to noon at South Middle School, 800 South Alves Street. Contestants should prepare a 90-second routine and a 90-second back-up routine. Performers chosen to compete will have access to sound equipment.

Any instruments used in auditions must be carried in by hand in one trip. If the act requires any additional equipment, a 90 second DVD should be brought to the audition. Members of the act should be dressed in performance costume as they present the DVD. Those using a backing track must bring a CD. Singers are required to sing a cappella. Performances by finalists are limited to three minutes.

The audition fee is $20 per act, and a minimum of fifteen acts will be selected to compete for the grand prize ($1000), second place ($500), and third place ($250). Viewing the auditions is open to the public for a fee of $5 per person. Auditions will be recorded and sent by WFIE to America’s Got Talent.

Tickets for the finals of Ohio Valley’s Got Talent are $15. Beginning January 21, tickets will be at Matt’s, from any Colonels 2 College board member, or by contacting Arlene Alexander at arlene.alexander@kctcs.edu. Tickets will be available at the Fine Arts Center the night of the performance.

Proceeds from Ohio Valley’s Got Talent will go to Colonels 2 College, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarship funds for Henderson County High School students who will attend Henderson Community College.

New Year Brings New Events, Postcards & Tourism Guide to The Depot

With the new year comes tons of new events to Henderson. The Henderson County Tourist Commission has been hard at work compiling a full list of events in the area. This listing, available online at www.hendersonky.org/event includes music performances, festivals, children’s activities and more.

Happy 2011 to all of our readers and followers! This year started off with a bang. We've put up our new Calendar of Events on our website, and there are tons of new events to celebrate this year! Here's just a few we are excited about:

• Downtown Walking Tours will resume on April 2. The tours feature historic buildings in downtown and are free to the public. Info: (270) 830-9707

• Take a trip to a simpler time of poodle skirts, drive-ins and T-Birds at the Henderson Fine Art Center's production of the Broadway musical Greece! Info: (270) 830-9800

• The Ohio Valley Birding Festival has grown over the past few years, and Henderson's location as a birding area has been highlighted in several of this year's events. On May 1, come to John James Audubon State Park for a day full of events. There will be several staff-led hikes, a hummingbird seminar and other workshops. Info: (270) 826-2247

• This year is the Steamboat Bicentennial. Henderson's location along the Ohio River makes it a perfect spot to celebrate! On May 21st, The Depot Community Room staff with team up with Ohio Valley Marine and others to mark this day. Children can enjoy a day full of activities on the Ohio Riverfront on Water Street. Winter Bird Species Abundant in Henderson

Winter is here in full force, and so are the birds! Although 75% of North America’s nesting bird species migrate during the winter, several survivors stay put. Small birds, especially, adapt well to colder temperatures.

Henderson has been named one of the Top Bird Watching Tour Spots in the Midwest. Two places that are perfect for viewing birds and other animal species are John James Audubon State Park on Highway 41 North and The Sloughs Wildlife Management Area off US 60 West.

Audubon Park offers several outdoor birding and hiking trails and two lakes for viewing wildlife. If it seems too cold to be outside, step into the Museum and Nature Center, located within the park. The nature center has an observation area where the visitor can view birds with provided binoculars. Microphones located in the bird feeding area bring the some of the bird songs into the museum. During January and February, winter hours at the park are 10am-5pm Thursday-Sunday. For an extra special stay, contact the park about staying in a lakeside cottage.

The Sloughs Wildlife Area is a wonderful place to view the traveling shorebirds and waterfowl during the winter. Although some trails are closed during the winter, several observation platforms are set-up along the road to view birds.

On Saturday, January 15, Wildlife Biologist, Mike Morton, from The Sloughs will speak at Audubon State Park from 2-3pm. He’ll discuss how winter birds survive in our tri-state winters. The program is free and all are welcome.

This holiday season, spend time with family and friends taking in some of the wonderful activities Henderson has to offer!

Wolf’s Tavern and Restaurant has just reopened at 31 North Green St. with a full service menu, offering lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday. Nothing says winter like a warm bowl of soup and visiting with friends. The restaurant is located in downtown Henderson among several other interesting architectural businesses and homes. Children and adults alike will enjoy the views at “Christmas in the Park” in Central Park. Enjoy light exhibits, a life-size Santa sleigh and wooden displays. Located in the central business district, this holiday display is only moments from the local retailers. You can find everything from shoes, kitchen items, clothing and more in downtown Henderson.

Looking for holiday learning opportunities? Kids will enjoy the Early American Christmas Display at The Depot Community Room at 101 N. Water St. A replica of a pioneer cabin offers fun for all, while a working train display promises entertainment for little ones. The display runs until January 1.

For adults, Ruby Moon Vineyard and Winery offers a perfect place to warm up. Henderson’s only winery is located at 9566 U.S. 41 A. Enjoy a glass of wine by the fireplace and sample gourmet Kentucky-made cheeses. Open Tuesday – Saturday, 11am-6pm.

Nature lovers can catch sight of birds, deer and other wildlife on the trails at Audubon State Park. Don’t feel like braving the weather? Just come into the Museum, which offers heat, and one of the most extensive collections of John James Audubon’s nature artifacts. While inside, you can also view the “Audubon’s Fabulous Fiber” exhibit, which offers a colorful array of fiber artworks.

Historic Holiday Display at The Depot Perfect for Children, Families

Exhibit Includes Life Size Pioneer Cabin & Victorian Christmas Display

The Depot Community Room will present their Early American Christmas exhibit in the month of December, including a special day-long celebration December 11th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

This year, the staff has turned a room in the building into a pioneer cabin. (Photo shows part of the display set up.) Decked out with traditional holiday garb and several antique items, visitors can step back in time and learn how families during the Colonial period would have spent their holidays. The room contains many artifacts, including a family Bible, a hand-strung bed, quilts, tobacco twists and much more.

Those interested in enjoying a more interactive display can visit on December 11th. On this day, the staff will dress in period costumes, and there will be several activities, as well as a reading of “The Christmas Carol.”

Located in the heart of Henderson, The Depot is a replica of the original train depot built in 1901 and stands as an example of the city’s commitment to preserving the past while embracing the future. It showcases the history of the city through several stationary exhibits and a monthly rotating exhibit. Hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Tourist Commission Recieves Two Awards At Annual Tourism Conference

The Henderson County Tourist Commission received two awards in the 2010 Kentucky Tourism Council Traverse Awards for excellence in tourism marketing.

The Tourist Commission received first place in Social Media and second place for their Visitor’s Guide. Both awards were received Tuesday October 19 during the Traverse Gala held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Kentucky as part of the 2010 Kentucky Tourism Industry Annual Conference.

Kentucky tourism businesses and marketing organizations vie for awards in 20 separate categories during the annual competition produced by the Kentucky Tourism Council. A panel of out-of-state experts judged over 240 entries from across the state for this year’s presentation of awards.

Traverse Awards for Excellence in Tourism Marketing are open to Kentucky Tourism Council and Kentucky Hotel & Lodging Association members marketing a tourism product or service in Kentucky. All entries must have been published or distributed within the past year. Each entry is judged for concept, creativity, design and how well it relates to its audience.

The Henderson County Tourist Commission is located at 101 N. Water Street in The Depot. The staff provides the latest information on events and attractions in the area, and assists with planning and coordinating new and existing events in the area to attract new visitors. In 2009, tourism was a nearly 67 million-dollar industry in Henderson County.

Give Thanks! Annual Turkey Trot to Benefit Brain Injury Camp

Come one, come all! Everyone's invited to come out Thanksgiving morning for the annual Turkey Trot in downtown Henderson. The 5K walk benefits a local charity each year. This year proceeds go to the Brain Injury Camp.

Pre-registration starts at 8:00am and goes until 8:45am at the Presbyterian Church, located at 100 S. Main St. Race starts promptly at 9am.

The course extends through beautiful downtown Henderson, including the riverfront. Also enjoy refreshments, “My Old Kentucky Home” serenade, and JT, the Trot mascot. This is a family event for all ages. Runners, walkers, bikers, roller-bladers and skateboarders are all welcome.

The Southeast Tourism Society has announced that the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival has been designated one of its Top 20 Events for June 2011. Recently celebrating its 20th year, the W.C. Get Spooked in Henderson!

This year, Henderson is offering several safe, fun Halloween activities for both little ones and an older crowd.

The annual Spooks and Legends Walking Tour will be held Saturday, October 16 at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. This tour highlights some of the spooky folklore and legends of Henderson County. There have been several additions this year, so feel free to come if you've been before! Meet at The Depot at 101 N. Water St.

Audubon State Park will offer two events this year. On Monday, October 25 at 6 p.m., join members of the Paranormal Investigators of Henderson, Kentucky at the Audubon Museum as they discuss their latest search into ghost stories and sightings. This free program gives onlookers a chance to learn about this group, their experiences and recent research.

On Saturday, October 30 from 4 p.m. – 9 p.m., the park will present Halloween Spooktacular for children. This event will feature, pumpkin painting, magicians, Halloween photos, food and a special haunted trail. The program costs $2 per person. Ages 3 and under are free.

The annual Downtown Trick or Treat and Halloween parade will be held Friday, October 29 at 5 p.m. The community is invited for safe trick or treating at downtown businesses before the parade from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.

For those looking for a great place to pick pumpkins and explore a corn maze, Cate’s Corn Maze is open now until Halloween. The farm is located on Highway 1217 at Box #8132. The public if invited to explore the farm and children will love the games and obstacles set up outside.

Annual Spooks & Legends Tour of Henderson Scheduled For October 16

Ghost stories and true stories of folks who met untimely death have a way of intriguing a community’s interest. And in a city like Henderson, that’s been here for more than 200 years, such tales abound.

The Depot Community Room staff has compiled some of these stories into a unique walking tour that intricately weaves the haunted folklore of Henderson with historical facts. The result is an extraordinarily (and paranormal) good time!

The tour date is set for Saturday, October 16th at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. weather permitting, and will begin at The Depot (pictured above). If the October 16th tour is canceled due to weather, the rain date will be Saturday, October 23.

It's that time again! The Highway 60 Yard Sale is looking for participants - and why wouldn't you want to get involved?

This 200+ mile yard sale celebrates its fifth year in 2010 and has grown to include 8 western Kentucky counties. These include Livingston, Crittenden, Union, Henderson, Daviess, Hancock, Breckinridge & Meade counties. The annual sale will be held the weekend of Oct 1-3, 2010 along Highway 60.

Hundreds of local individuals, businesses, and groups are expected to participate this year, setting up yard sales and craft booths on their properties along the highway. This unique event allows visitors from Kentucky and surrounding states to enjoy an exciting shopping experience, while taking in the distinctive flavor of the Ohio Valley’s unique restaurants, shops, and southern hospitality. The sale will also provide an excellent opportunity for local organizations and clubs to hold fund-raising events.

In addition to the Highway 60 Yard Sale, shoppers may also want to check out the Green River Area Development District’s Arts & Crafts Festival, held concurrently at John James Audubon State Park in Henderson, along the western portion of the route, on Saturday and Sunday, October 2 and 3. For the past 38 years, this annual event has been delighting visitors with artisan and craftsman booths, artist demonstrations, delicious food, and live music, set against a scenic natural backdrop.

Experience Audubon State Park's Monarch Migration Mysteries

Imagine going on a trip with no luggage; no food, water, map or compass; abandoned by your family; en route to a place that you've never been to. Now imagine that you'll never live long enough to complete your round trip. Your children and grandchildren will never live long enough to finish your trip, but perhaps your great-grandchildren might live to see your ancestral wintering grounds if they survive all of the life-threatening obstacles along the way. Now, you're beginning to experience life as a monarch butterfly.

This month you can join Audubon State Park staff for four tagging opportunities. Programs on Saturday September 18 and Sunday, September 19 begin at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and last about 2.5-3 hours. During an informative presentation you'll learn everything you need to know to identify and catch monarchs. We'll then drive out to the Sloughs Wildlife Management Area for the weather dependent butterfly tagging portion. Since most of the program is outdoors, long pants and closed-toe footwear is encouraged. Be prepared for potentially marshy conditions.

These annual butterfly tagging programs attract families, scout troops, as well as interested community members looking to spend an afternoon away from the hustle and bustle. Tagging events like these help the community connect with nature and broaden the base of understanding surrounding these winged wonders.

During mid-September, monarch butterflies are passing through this area on their journey south in search of warmer weather and more favorable wintering grounds. At the end of their journey they'll congregate almost exclusively on 12 mountain peaks located just west of Mexico City, Mexico - almost 1500 miles away. There, nearly all of the living North American monarch butterflies come together for a breathtaking spectacle as the Mexican trees and shrubs literally drip with these colorful creatures.

Although monarchs migrate every year, there is still so much we still don’t know about these magnificent insects. Monarch Watch, an educational outreach organization, developed the tagging stickers to track the monarch's journey progression and to answer some of the mysteries surrounding these unique butterflies. The sticker tags, placed on a monarch’s hindwing, each have a unique identification number, a reporting e-mail address and phone number so that tagged butterflies can be reported as recovered.

This past winter was a rough one for monarchs. According to a Monarch Watch blog, many millions of the overwintering monarchs perished over the winter months in Mexico - perhaps as many as 50% of the Mexico monarch population. Rain, freezing temperatures, landslides, and hail hit the overwintering grounds this past January and February. Naturally that means less monarchs returning to the U.S. to reproduce. Fortunately, the monarchs that survived found favorable conditions in Texas helping them on the long road of rebuilding the numbers of those lost.

7:30 AM Early Bird Walk – John James Audubon enjoyed walking in the forests of Wolf Hills which is now the Audubon Park Nature Preserve. Lifelong birder, Carol Gehret, will lead us along the borders of the woods where viewing is best. We will be in search of sights and sounds of the variety of birds that love the early morning hours. Bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them.

9:00 AM Bird Banding with Scott Kramer – Scott is an Indiana Master Naturalist, Certified Interpretive Guide and federally licensed bird bander. Join Scott while he continues his ongoing conservation project of catching, identifying, banding and releasing birds at the Audubon State Park Nature Preserve. Be prepared to ‘help him out’ when he releases the birds. Be sure to bring your camera for some close-encounter pictures.

Henderson Celebrates It's Bicentennial With Horses, Music...And A Beard Contest!

The City of Henderson will celebrate its bicentennial with events scheduled for September 11-18, 2010. The schedule includes a horse show and a “Henderson Bicentennial Celebration” picnic with live music, children's events, a beard contest and more.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11
The celebration will begin with the Henderson City Horse Show on Saturday, September, 11 at the Henderson County Fairgrounds. The show will begin at 8 a.m. and will include competitions in Western Horsemanship, Saddleseat Equitation and several other categories.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
On Sunday, September 12, the city will host a “Henderson Bicentennial Celebration” picnic from 12-4 p.m. in Central Park. Interested attendees are encouraged to dress in 1810-era clothing and to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy during the festivities. The mayor will issue a proclamation, birthday cake will be served, and live music will be played. A beard contest will also take place this day. Awards will be given in the beard contest in the following categories such as Abe Lincoln, Reddest, Most Creative and Most Pitiful. Thomason's BBQ and Countryview Baptist Church concessions will be available. Everyone is welcome to bring a picnic lunch.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18
The celebration will continue with children's events on Saturday, September 18 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. in Central Park. Activities will include demonstrations and more from students at Niagara, Spottsville, Bend Gate and South Heights Schools. Live music will include the Bicentennial Bluegrass All-Star Band, Dave Redmon and other acoustic musicians. The celebration will include casual play of corn hole and washers in Central Park. Concessions will be available during the event.

Play Presents A New Side of John Audubon's Story

John James Audubon: Before His Birds will be presented on Thursday and Friday, August 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. in the museum garden of Audubon State Park. The play was written by A.J. Casey and is co-directed by Casey and Steve McCarty, technical director at Henderson Fine Arts Center.

A.J. Casey holds a theater degree from Murray State University and currently teaches at RiverBend Academy arts school. John James Audubon: Before His Birds is Casey’s first full-length script and was written as a thesis project. He created the script in cooperation with the Audubon Bicentennial Committee as part of Audubon in Henderson: A Bicentennial Celebration – 1810-2010.

The gorgeous outdoor setting of the play’s presentation is in keeping with Audubon’s love of the natural world, and is a fitting tribute to Audubon’s many treks into the wilderness surrounding Henderson, Ky. during his time here. The museum itself will lend a dramatic backdrop to the production.

John James Audubon: Before His Birds focuses on Audubon’s life and his influences as the creator of the masterpiece Birds of America. His intense love affair with his wife Lucy, as well as his many years spent gathering inspiration and material in Henderson, Ky, played heavily into Audubon’s life and success, and are chronicled in Casey’s original play.

The local cast includes: John (Chris Reaves); Lucy (Megan Mortis); Capt. Jean Audubon and Artistic Admirer (Frank Furbush); Anne Moynet (Megan Nantz); William B. and Thomas B. FAMILY FUN

In the morning, enjoy a bike ride along the riverfront and a visit to one of Henderson's most popular city-operated parks, Atkinson Park. The park offers recreational activities such as disc golf, swimming, biking, and the Riverwalk path. The pool is opened seasonally from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

Grab a sandwich at a downtown deli or get carryout from one of the many restaurants, and eat at a picnic table in Audubon Mill Park on the riverfront. While there, explore the park’s rich history. Signs describe naturalist’s John James Audubon’s grist mill, which was once located in the park. Statues of Audubon and his birds are throughout the park.

Stop by The Depot and ask for a Sculpture W alking Tour brochure. This brochure describes a scavenger hunt of hidden statue details. The whole family can work together to discover the unique hidden creatures in the bird sculptures.

Be sure to take the kids to John James Audubon State Park as well. Enjoy recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and hiking. The nature center allows children to get an up close view of snakes, turtles, and other creatures in the park. Throughout the year, kids can participate in children’s activities at the park. Staying for more than one day? Drive to nearby Evansville and visit the Children’s Museum of Evansville or the Mesker Park Zoo for additional fun activities for the whole family.

BIRDING

Start your day by visiting John James Audubon State Park. Nearly two centuries ago, John James Audubon, renowned naturalist and artist, came to explore the surrounding wilderness in search of wild birds to study and sketch. Before you come, request birding and trail maps online or stop by The Depot.

Next head downtown for lunch and shopping. While there, enjoy the Audubon Sculpture Walking Tour. Several bird statues based on Audubon’s artwork are on display throughout Henderson’s city streets and in the parks.

Take a moment to enjoy the barges on the Ohio River at Audubon Mill Park, before heading to the Sloughs Wildlife Management Area. These wetlands are home to nearly 10,000 geese and 10,000 ducks during the winter. Great blue heron, bald eagle, prothonotary warbler, waterfowl, swamp rabbit, squirrel, deer, quail, raccoon, beaver, coyote, and dove are all found here.

Consider staying in one of the six cottages at John James Audubon State Park, and enjoy the lakefront views in the morning.

If you have more than one day, we’d recommend hiking and climbing at nearby Garden of the Gods in Illinois. While there enjoy a ferry ride and explore Cave In Rock.

Historic Downtown Walking Tour
Henderson’s unique place in world trade at the close of the 19th century, largely due to the tremendous dark tobacco exporting business located here, provided the setting for the construction of a rather surprising number of expensive homes, given the size of the community. In addition to grand homes, structures include city buildings, the library, banks and downtown businesses. Atkinson Park Riverwalk
A scenic 1.2 mile trail high above the banks of the Ohio River offers an excellent view with resting areas and wheelchair accessibility. The riverbank park offers golf, bike paths, a swimming pool and water slide, playground, picnic facilities, skate park, and an 18 hole disc golf course.

Civil War Driving Tour
The Ohio River Civil War Heritage Corridor encompasses the six Kentucky counties that border Illinois and the Ohio River. Bluegrass in the Park Celebrates 25 Years With A Commemorative Poster

To celebrate the Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival’s 25th year, committee member and Henderson photographer and graphic designer, Fred Reaves has designed a commemorative, limited edition poster.

The 18" x 24" poster prominently features the instruments of bluegrass music and a 1930’s photo of a bluegrass family. A complete listing of all the groups who have ever played at the festival is included in the background of the poster.

The Festival Committee is proud to offer this unique poster to all of the bluegrass fans and supporters who have helped make this year possible. The poster will cost $20.00, and will be available at The Bluegrass General Store tent at the festival, along with t-shirts, stickers and hats.

Folklife Festival to Highlight Grandpa Jones

Many are familiar with the southern-drawl of good ole “Grandpa Jones”, rattling off a list of southern fare or pickin’ and singin’ a lively banjo number on the popular 1970s show “Hee-Haw.”

His persona will come to life again at the folklife area during the Bluegrass In the Park and Folklife Festival August 14. David Hurt, a Kentucky Humanities Council Chautauqua speaker, will portray Louis Marshall “Grandpa” Jones, a Henderson native, in the festival narrative tent at noon that day. Kentucky Humanities Council speakers Jim Claypool and Sarah Rejoice Brown will also give listeners rare glimpses into western Kentucky’s underground mining traditions and some of Kentucky’s noted and notorious characters. Claypool’s talk on “Rascals, Heroes and Just Plain Uncommon Folks” kicks off the event at 10 a.m., and area miners will join Brown at 11:15 a.m. for a discussion on the tricks and traditions of underground mining.

You will also have the chance to watch a llama being sheared for its wool at the folk life festival, and learn about old-time crafts like canoe-building, quilting and canning or learn clogging from a master Appalachian dance instructor!

If you want to learn more about these traditions or you just want to experience them, then come down to the Folklife area on Saturday, August 14 from 10am-2pm. Folklife is presented by The Depot Community Room, The Downtown Henderson Project, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation, Henderson County Cooperative Extension, Kentucky Humanities Council and Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival Committee.

• Shade Tree Players: This dulcimer group will demonstrate the art of dulcimer music.
• Fried Apple Pies: Children can make and eat their own fried apple pies.
• Canning: Demonstration on the steps of canning your own salsa.
• Herbs: Debbie Lowrance will discuss growing and harvesting herbs.
• Burgoo: Paul Stone will share the secrets of making burgoo, a traditional Western Kentucky dish.
• Sidewalk Chalk Art: Local artists will create quilt patterns that children (and adults, too!) can trace in chalk on the sidewalk.
• Quilter: Janet Burke will display her quilts and show the process of quilt making.
• Canoe Construction: Peter Chevalier will display and work on a “proof of concept” canoe made without power tools, dimensional lumber or modern fasteners.
• Llama Shearer, fabric and fiber artists: A local farmer will demonstrate how to shear a llama for their wool, and fiber artists will demonstrate how to turn that wool into fabric.
• Children’s Games The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Dept. will have old-time games like checkers, chess, hoola hoops and washer boards available for children to play.
• Western Kentucky Miners: Area miners will have mining tools on display.

Narrative Tent:
• Sarah Rejoice Brown (11:15 a.m.): Occupational Tradition of Coal Mining in Western Kentucky. Brown and area miners will share stories, customs, terminology, and related rare glimpses into tricks of the underground trade
• Jim Claypool (10 a.m.): Claypool, a Kentucky Humanities Council speaker, will profile a choice selection of the many colorful Kentuckians, male and female, noted and notorious- whose stories make our history so interesting and entertaining.
• David Hurt as Grandpa Jones (Noon): Louis Marshall Jones, better known as Grandpa, was the son of Henderson County sharecroppers. Hard times drove the family north to Akron, Ohio in the late 1920s. Grandpa Jones had a celebrated music career spanning more than 60 years, and is best-known for portraying his beloved “Grandpa Jones” character on the popular 1970s comedy “Hee-Haw.”
• Barry Lanham and the Foot Stompin’ Express (1:15 p.m.): Lanham is a master instructor of Appalachian dance based out of Owensboro, Ky. Lanham and his clogging troupe will demonstrate the folk tradition of clogging and teach a beginner’s class on the basics! Lanham’s clogging classes offer virtually non-stop dancing, instruction, music, high-spirited fun and friendship.

The 25th annual Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival is set to take place August 13-14, 2010, in Henderson, Kentucky. The festival will feature great Bluegrass music, events, and food, all in an incredible location on the banks of the Ohio River.

The musical lineup for 2010 boasts traditional and progressive Bluegrass acts, including festival headliners, The Boxcars, who may very well be the country’s next Bluegrass super group. Comprised of some of the most talented fellows in the genre, the band members include Adam Steffey, Ron Stewart, John Bowman, Keith Garrett, and Harold Nixon. The festival will also feature a progressive Bluegrass from Russia, Country Saloon. The festival promises fans a Bluegrass music experience like no other!

Los Toribio, one of Henderson's Mexican restaurants was recently reviewed in Evansville Living Magazine. Staff writers had good things to say about the decor, service..and of course THE FOOD.

"Ignacio “Nacho” Toribio never planned to work in a restaurant. Nearly three decades ago, living in Atlanta, he spent weekends helping his older brother Ramon run a Mexican restaurant. Arriving early in the morning and staying late at night “was something I didn’t like at all,” Toribio admits. “I was 25 or 26 and enjoying my life. I said, ‘This is not for me.’”

But years later, Toribio learned of a small Mexican eatery for sale in Henderson, Ky. Thinking of his brother’s successful business in Atlanta, he told himself, “At least I’m going to give it a try.” Toribio now owns two Los Toribio Mexican restaurants in Henderson."

Pickin’ & Pedalin’ Bicycle Tour To Be Held Saturday, August 14th

The 7th Annual Pickin’ & Pedalin’ Bicycle Tour will be held Saturday, August 14th in Henderson, Ky in conjunction with the Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival. This year’s ride will benefit the American Red Cross Cardinal Chapter.

The ride begins at Audubon Mill Park, located on Water Street between First and Second Streets in downtown Henderson, Ky. Routes travel through Main Street where you can view many beautiful, historic homes on the way to some of the flattest and nicest country roads a bicyclist could ever want.

Offered routes include 12, 22, 37, or 62 miles in length. Traffic is generally light, but all riders must always exercise caution. Several rest stops along the way will feature live bluegrass entertainment, refreshments and restrooms.

Early registration prior to August 5 is $25. Price is $30 per rider after that date.

Henderson has a lot to celebrate this July!

On July 3, come to Audubon Mill Park on the riverfront and enjoy the bicentennial of John James Audubon’s landing in Henderson. Major events will be held throughout the day, including live music, historical reenactments, period dancers and a costume contest. A guided walking tour of the lesser-known Audubon spots will start at The Depot at 1 p.m. Concessions will be offered throughout the morning and during the afternoon events.

Celebrate Independence Day on July 4 with live music by Keith Vincent! Enjoy Vincent’s mix of country and rock ‘n’ roll beginning at 7 p.m. at the riverfront. And who could forget the fireworks? They’ll start at 9 p.m.!

Finally, the day all the horse fans have been waiting for…opening day at Ellis Park Race Track! Head to the track on July 10 to enjoy the kick off of the 2010 season of live thoroughbred horse racing. Experience the thrill of picking a horse and watching it race to the finish line. Gates open at 11 a.m.

Audubon Celebration Brings Music, Food and Fun for the Whole Family!

The bicentennial of John James Audubon's arrival in Henderson will be celebrated with major events on the Henderson downtown riverfront on Saturday July 3. Completely FREE and open to the public, these events will include live music by major military, historical and bluegrass bands, historical reenactments, period dancers and a costume contest. Concession sales will be offered throughout the morning and evening events. Morning events will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Evening events start at 7:30p.m.

Audubon first came to Henderson by sailing down the Ohio River from Louisville. We will celebrate with a reenactment of his arrival 200 years ago. Audubon will arrive in a wooden skiff characteristic of the period. The Saxton's Cornet Band will be on hand to greet John James Audubon as he arrives at the downtown Henderson riverfront, near the intersection of 2nd and Water. The band, in authentic 19th- century costume, faithfully recreates the sounds, appearance and conduct of brass bands of a bygone era. Full of energy and entertaining both musically and visually, the performance will be a complete, historically accurate concert experience from the mid-nineteenth century. City and county officials, as well as a state senator and representative, will be on hand to meet and greet Audubon upon his arrival and present him with the key to the city. You won't want to miss the celebration as we welcome Audubon back to Henderson!

The reenactment will resume as Brian Fox Ellis, professional reenactor and storyteller, plays the part of John James Audubon, presenting the story of his life from a first-person perspective. Learn about his journey to Henderson, experiences in the area, and his work as an artist. Performances by the AuduBonBons and Highway 41 will provide live music; period dancers,
instructed by Elaine Benson and Debbie Dewey, will perform tap, minuet and folk dances that would have been popular during the 1800's. Elaine and Pascal Benson will also dance. Bring your dancing shoes!

Attendees who come dressed in their best 19th-century costume will compete for a $100 first prize in the Costume Contest. The costume winner will be announced between 12-1 p.m.

Church/Organ Themed Walking Tour

The Henderson Depot Community Room is sponsoring a special walking tour that will highlight the histories of several churches in the downtown area.

Due to the large amount of churches in the downtown area, the Community Room staff has decided to divide the churches into two tours. Both tours are unique, because we are not only discussing church histories, but organ histories as well.

The first tour is set for this Saturday, June 5 at 10 a.m. in the Community Room. They will discuss the histories of several places along the way and go inside First Baptist and the Presbyterian for a closer look at their musical organs.

The downtown walking tours take place on the first Saturday of each month, April through November, weather permitting, and begin with an overview of Henderson's rich history in the Community Room. The tour takes approximately one hour.

Organist Matthew Vanover and Nibby Priest will be playing some of the organs, and Tamara Self will speak about some of the lesser-known history of the churches.

The second church tour is scheduled for the Fall, with dates to be announced at a later time.

7:00 PM Campfire Chat with John James Audubon – Join Audubon State Park Museum Curator Alan Gehret around a roaring campfire as he spins tales of the days when John James Audubon roamed this land. Hear stories of Audubon’s stay in Henderson, Kentucky almost 200 years ago.

How long? 45 minutes.

11:00 AM Audubon’s Resident Raptors – Meet Mousetrap, Scarlett or Reddy, our beautiful and interesting raptors in residence. We will take a close look at this unique group of birds that has special adaptations for hunting to survive Where? Campground Shelter.
How along? 45 minutes.
Who? All ages. Children under 7 should be supervised by an adult. ABSOLUTELY NO PETS!  

2:00 PM Memorial Day Parade Preparation - Meet at the Campground Shelter to decorate your bicycles, scooters, wagons and floats for our Memorial Day Parade. We’ll have lots of red, white and blue streamers, balloons and crepe paper. Cool lemonade will be served to quench your thirst.

3:00 PM Memorial Day Campground Parade – Everyone loves a parade, and you will too when you join us for a real live parade around Audubon’s Campground. Bring your bicycles, tricycles, scooters, motorcycles, wagons and baby strollers for a red - white & blue celebration! Where? Campground Shelter.
How Long? 45 minutes.
Who? All ages.

Audubon Arts & Nature Children Camps

This June, enjoy nature camps at Audubon State Park. Children ages 3-12 are invited for 2-day and 3-day sessions where they can enjoy art making, reptile and bird viewing, hikes, bubbles, fishing and more. All camps are from 10am to noon.

Limited space is available. All children must bring a sack lunch. Pre-registration is required. Tennis shoes are advised. Class materials, snacks and tee shirts are included.
